SCLD welcomes Matthew our Evidence & Policy Intern!
Our newest member of the SCLD team, Evidence & Policy Intern, Matthew, introduces himself and tells us what it has been like to start a new job from your own home…
“My name is Matthew Muirhead and I am the new Evidence and Policy intern here at SCLD. I’m originally from Falkirk and I studied at the University of Glasgow, where I obtained a Master of Arts (MA) in Politics and a Postgraduate Diploma in Political Communication. I have previously volunteered with CVS Falkirk, however this internship with SCLD is the first time I have been in paid employment.
I have a wide range of hobbies including reading both fiction and non-fiction, film, video games, concert going, theatre, museums and art galleries. I love to travel and am a keen quizzer, taking part in a regular pub quiz, albeit virtually for now!
I am extremely interested in SCLD’s work and believe that it has an essential role in improving the lives of those with learning disabilities in Scotland. I was drawn to the position of Evidence and Policy Intern, as I am interested in the role which SCLD plays in scrutinising and influencing government policy, particularly as my previous experience is in the study of politics.

Starting a new job during the COVID-19 lockdown has been a strange experience, especially with it being my first job! It has taken me a bit of time to get up and running with my workspace and the IT equipment. It was a bit daunting being introduced to all my new colleagues purely through my computer screen, however I have found everyone to be friendly, understanding, and extremely helpful. In terms of the upsides of working from home – the opportunity will help to give me valuable experience of being able to work flexibly. On a more personal note, another upside for me is the fact that I don’t have to make the commute into Glasgow while working at home. Hopefully, in time, when the current crisis comes to an end, I will have a chance to introduce myself in person in the office.

During my time at SCLD I am looking forward to getting to know my new colleagues and gaining firsthand experience of working as part of a team. I also look forward to playing an active role in making the lives of those with learning disabilities in Scotland better.”
