Many people with learning disabilities are able to work and want to work but experience significant challenges and barriers to finding work, remaining in work and progressing in work.

The ‘Working’ theme of the Keys to Life Implementation Framework priorities employment and employability as a key area of focus for the strategy. 

Many people with learning disabilities are able to work and want to work but experience significant challenges and barriers to finding work, remaining in work and progressing in work. 

Reasons for this include persistent negative attitudes, workplaces which are not suitably adapted, recruitment process which are not accessible, a continued lack of support for both people and employers, as well as lack of awareness about the support that does exist. 

The employment rate for people with learning disabilities is far lower than for the general population and also considerably lower compared with the overall disability employment rate. 

In committing to more than halve the disability employment gap the Scottish Government’s A fairer Scotland for Disabled People: employment action plan recognises the need to provide appropriate support, training and opportunities for people with learning disabilities who want to work.

We are committed to working with our partners and stakeholders across Scotland to help increase employment opportunities for people with learning disabilities and crucially change attitudes towards the employment of people with learning disabilities by employers.
