Struan’s reflections on his time at SCLD
During my time at SCLD I undertook an extensive literature review with the initial focus being on supported decision making (SDM) practice and how we can encourage better practice in Scotland. While the initial plan was to focus solely on practice, after beginning my research I decided to expand this to examine legal and cultural perspectives as well so that I could give a better overview of the topic area.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the SCLD, not just in getting to learn about what they do, but also the value of their work. The SCLD and organisations like it in Scotland are fundamentally important to championing disability rights issues and putting those with lived experience at the head of everything they do.
Fundamentally I have had my own perspectives on disability challenged and had the opportunity to reflect on my own past actions in the disability support space challenged and it has made aware of where I could do better. Holistically, my time with the SCLD has given me inspiration for many new avenues my career might take going on from this experience, but I will always look back on my time with the SCLD as a good starting point, that has set me up well for a career in disability rights and policy.
Overall I am very grateful to everyone in the SCLD team for making this such a good learning experience.
