The 'WOT?' research
By doing the research we wanted to find out about:
Organisations whose services are specific to the needs of people with learning disabilities and their families
The major barriers facing individuals and families in accessing support especially from organisations who don’t specifically work with black and minority ethnic or race issues
The experiences of people with learning disabilities and families in trying to get support that meets their needs and the issues they face within their communities
Good practice in engaging with and supporting people with learning disabilities and families from black and minority ethnic communities.
How we carried out the research:
Sent out questionnaires to lots of different organisations
Did interviews with organisations who work with people with learning disabilities from BME communities and their families
Did interviews with people with learning disabilities and family members from BME communities
Had a live radio debate on Radio Awaz (an Asian radio station in Glasgow)
Read lots of research, policy papers and laws to do with learning disability, disability and race issues
Checked statistics (numbers) about how many people from BME communities live in Scotland
Looked at the eSAY numbers to see how many people with learning disabilities from BME communities are touch with local councils across Scotland.
The research took a long time to do and we learned that you must take your time and make good links with communities in order to find out about things that are important to them.
