Employment

A story of how LAC helped in finding employment

Story 1

I used to live with my mum and dad in West Lothian and my social worker helped me find a house of my own. She also gave my name to the Local Area Co-ordinator. Once I was settled in my new home, I wanted to get a job. I also wanted to start doing more things for myself and make my own choices.

The Local Area Co-ordinator was called Caroline. I had a meeting with her and asked her for help to get a job. Caroline listened to what I wanted. She came to meetings with me and helped me to fill out forms. I got a job and Caroline met with my employers and explained some of the problems I had. This helped a lot.

Caroline helped me with other things too. When I first moved into my new home things were difficult as I had to ask my Mum for help all the time with letters and forms. We didn’t always agree! Since Caroline has been involved, things have started to get better with my Mum. She can see that I am managing my tenancy and job. I have also now got engaged.

Caroline was there when I needed her to meet with me or talk to me on the phone. I do things for myself now and I feel good about this.

Story 2

I first met with my Local Area Co-ordinator through Lews Castle College on Benbecula. I was looking for help to become more confident. I also needed support to move on from my college course into employment.

With support from my LAC, I received training in craft and gardening work. I also managed to find work locally with the Highland and Islands Enterprise.

With my new found confidence I began going out more and making new friends but the most important part is that I found the courage to ask for support.

My LAC offered me support when I needed it and also assisted me to become better organised. Thanks to the support I received from my LAC I am now more confident, better organised and feeling much better within myself.
