What is Local Area Co-ordination?
Local Area Co-ordination is based on a vision of a society where disabled people and their carers are valued as full and equal members of the community.

Local Area Co-ordinators can help to achieve this by:
• Working alongside communities, supporting them to become more welcoming and inclusive.
• Working with individuals and their families to help them to become more confident, supporting them to achieve their dreams and to build independent lives.
Local Area Co-ordination started off in Australia and was introduced to Scotland as a recommendation in 'The same as you?' review of learning disability services in 2000. It said that health boards and local authorities should appoint Local Area Co-ordinators.
Local Area Co-ordination is based on 10 principles. See the easy read principles attached at the bottom of this page.
A 4 page leaflet about Local Area Co-ordination is also attached at the bottom of this page.
