A Working Life for All Disabled People: The Supported Employment Framework for Scotland

National and local government are committed to creating a more successful country, with opportunities for all of Scotland to flourish. In order to achieve this they need to ensure that people who can work, and want to, are given the opportunity to do so. For many disabled people there continue to be barriers which deny them this opportunity.

This Framework sets out the Scottish Government's shared determination for supporting disabled people into employment. You can read the document in full here...

Equality Act 2010

Equality means everyone having the same chances to do what they can. Some people may need extra help to get the same chances. When a person applies for a job the employer can ask if the person is disabled, and if they say they are disabled the employer might not give them the job. This is unfair. The Equality Act 2010 will make it harder for an employer to be unfair because it says they can only sometimes ask if a person is disabled. This policy becomes law in October 2010.  The same as you? A review of services for people with learning disabilities (2000)

'The same as you?' was published in May 2000 by the Scottish Government. The document recognised that services could be doing more to help people with learning disabilities to achieve a full life, particularly in the area of employment. It said local authorities should give people with learning disabilities more opportunities for work. You can read the full document here...

Working for a change? The same as you? National Implementation Group (2001)

In June 2001 the Scottish Executive set up a group to help make sure the 29 recommendations in 'The same as you?' were put into practice. This is called the Same as you? National Implementation Group - SAYIG - which included people with learning disabilities and their carers. Members decided to start with the things it believed would make a big difference to people with learning disabilities and one of these areas was employment. Disability Discrimination Act

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 and the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 aimed to end the unfairness that many disabled people face when trying to access employment, education and services. They make it against the law to discriminate against people with a disability during interviews, when deciding who gets a promotion or how much people are paid. You can read the 1995 policy in full here and the 2005 policy in full here.
