Meet the Employment Champions
Hi, my name is Michael McEwan and I am one of 7 Employment Champions employed by SCLD. I speak at conferences to allow a greater insight and understanding in to the barriers faced by disabled people whilst seeking employment . My presentation is based on my personal journey into the workplace . I speak about my transition from school to college and the difficulties I faced in trying to gain employment.

I have woked as an Employment Champion for over a year now. As part of my presentation I speak about changing people's views on employing someone with a learning disability. I now feel that there is a change and I am proud to be a part of that change.

I currently have three jobs and a very busy social life. I am a Director of dates-n-mates, a dating agency run by and for people with learning disabilities. At SCLD I am 1 of 4 Employment Champions and make presentations about the barriers faced by people with learning disabilities whilst seeking employment. I have just recently been appointed as a Temp Sessional Co-Trainer with the organisation. Lastly, I am a member of SAIF (Scottish Accessible Information Forum).

Umair has Asperger's syndrome. He studied Graphic Design at Cardonald College, gaining an HND. After endless unsuccessful job searches, he decided to start up his own business. As an SCLD Employment Champion, Umair tells his story of transition. Having presented at various schools for autism, he has been told by staff and pupils that he is an inspiration.
