SCLD Board
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance of the charity and has been drawn from the 12 partner organisations of the consortium who jointly applied to the Scottish Government to operate this project. No trustee has a financial interest in the company. All trustees complete the register of interests.
Trustees are identified by the partner organisations that they represent and this appointment is confirmed by the board. There are up to 24 members of the board, two places for each partner organisation. Appointments are subject to the rule that half the board members must be people with learning disabilities or family carers. A third of the trustees retire each year but are eligible for re-election. The board has an independent chair who is not a member of any partner organisation.
All new trustees receive a thorough introduction to the organisation and are invited to become actively involved in its work. A pre-board meeting of the trustees with learning difficulties is held at least a day before the board meeting to go through the agenda and explore their views.
The trustees meet four times a year. At each meeting they receive a financial report and a report on progress towards the Forward Plan. Each meeting reviews and evaluates progress on one key task area.
Zahir Fazal is SCLD’s Chair. Zahir is based in Glasgow and is a retired partner in a national firm of chartered accountants. He has been a trustee of the Queen’s Nursing Institute for over 10 years. Zahir wants to make a contribution to a charity that can make a difference to people’s lives.
